Happy Halloween

This year, we bought one of those pumpkin carving kits at Walgreens for $5. The kit comes with templates that you tape onto your pumpkin. The design is traced with a couple of little saws.

It took awhile, but I finally got a decent picture of it. Turned off all the lights, set my camera to take a night shot, and there it was.

Kind of looks like a person’s face on one side, doesn’t it?

Got a pumpkin pic to post? (Say that fast 5 times) Drop your link in comments. :)

Not Sleeping

I’m just tired of not sleeping. In the early morning hours stretching from 3:30 to 5:00, I am awake, staring off and on at the clock. This is annoying, especially when it happens most days, and all I really want is sleep.

Used to be that I would count on Ambien at times like this, but the last couple of times I took Ambien, it was not very effective. Where I used to be completely knocked out within 15 minutes, for example, not working.

Used to be that I could just get up, browse around on the Internet for awhile, then go back to bed. Not working.

Used to be that I could get up, start watching TV, and feel tired again. Sleep a few more hours later in the morning. No luck.

The need to sleep sometimes hits me at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, which is quite inconvenient, considering I am usually either working or doing something otherwise meaningful at that time of the day.

Advice?

Riding in 44 Degrees F

So I had the bright idea to get the motorcycles out and ride to our friends’ house for dinner, instead of taking the car. It was cold on the way there. At 8:30, when we came home, it was freezing. Seriously freezing.

When I got home, I got into a hot shower… well, after my skin came up to a normal temperature.

I am starting to see the value of chaps and winter riding gloves.

I just saw it on CNN.com: Red Cross: Many evacuees staying with friends, hotels

Just keeping an eye on the wildfires in Southern Cali, where my friend Melissa lives.

Nice Day

It’s been unusually warm here today… 82 degrees, or better, really. In celebration thereof, we took our motorcycles out for a 4 hour spin. Four hours because there was a stop for lunch, one for gas, two for halloween costume shopping and one rest break, because The Little Kid’s hind-end hurt.

I haven’t been on my bike for a week, so I had a tough time wanting to come home. One the way, though, I had to stop at the grocery, because the hubby caught two catfish and we needed breading and a few other things.

I was driving by the high school and there was a lot of activity. I think there was some kind of band competition going on there, because there were all kinds of busses and moving vans.

I was looking to change lanes, so I glanced to the right for a sec, then looked straight ahead, where I saw a car had stopped unexpectedly (at least to me!) about 7-8 feet in front of me. I’m sure I had plenty of room to safely stop, but I put on the skids, and my rear tire fish-tailed. I decided it would be better to let off the brake a little to steady the bike, and found an opportunity to get into the right-hand lane.

Problems like this used to freak me out. But now they just let me know that I know how to adjust to potential problems.

I thank my safety class instructors for that, as we practiced abrupt stops and what to do if your rear tire fishtails.

If I was in a car, I would have been in a lot more trouble, just because it would have taken more room to change lanes.

Swimming Lessons

My daughter is taking swimming lessons. Today, they began testing for graduation to the next level. Somewhere between last week and this week, she has developed the perfect crawl stroke. It’s textbook.

I’m not just saying that. Her butterfly stroke (not that I can do this stroke anyway) could use a little work (mine could use a lot), but the crawl is perfect.

She swam 3/4 of the way across the pool, tread water for 30 seconds, then returned to the side of the pool.

My eyes were wet.

I know a hardware failure when I see one

So, after setting up a network printer at my volunteer IT location :) , I determined that the new printer had a serious hardware issue; mainly all the pretty buttons on the front of the printer didn’t work. At all.

I left the person in charge of hardware acquisitions a note explaining the problem in detail and referring him to HP for swapping out the printer or having a certified repair person come out and fix it.

He chose to have his son come out and look at it, where he came to the same conclusion I did.

The hardware failed.

When I first got wind of the impending second opinion, frankly I thought, go ahead and waste more time trying to figure out how to fix something the HP repair person is going to have to fix. :)

Which they did.

And Now, this.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

by Dr. Seuss

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.

<!–
function HideContent(d) {
document.getElementById(d).style.display = “none”;
}
function ShowContent(d) {
document.getElementById(d).style.display = “block”;
}
function ReverseDisplay(d) {
if(document.getElementById(d).style.display == “none”) { document.getElementById(d).style.display = “block”; }
else { document.getElementById(d).style.display = “none”; }
}
//–>

See the rest.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
You’ll look up and down streets. Look ‘em over with care.
About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.”
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you’ll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you’ll head straight out of town.

It’s opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

And when things start to happen,
don’t worry. Don’t stew.
Just go right along.
You’ll start happening too.

OH!
THE PLACES YOU’LL GO!

You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed.
You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don’t
Because, sometimes, you won’t.

I’m sorry to say so
but, sadly, it’s true
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You’ll be left in a Lurch.

You’ll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you’ll be in a Slump.

And when you’re in a Slump,
you’re not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they’re darked.
A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?

And IF you go in, should you turn left or right…
or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite?
Or go around back and sneak in from behind?
Simple it’s not, I’m afraid you will find,
for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.

You can get so confused
that you’ll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place…

…for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That’s not for you!

Somehow you’ll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You’ll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,
once more you’ll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you’re that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. there are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You’ll be famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don’t.
Because, sometimes, they won’t.

I’m afraid that some times
you’ll play lonely games too.
Games you can’t win
’cause you’ll play against you.

All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you’ll be quite a lot.

And when you’re alone, there’s a very good chance
you’ll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won’t want to go on.

But on you will go
though the weather be foul
On you will go
though your enemies prowl
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike
and I know you’ll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

You’ll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You’ll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life’s
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So…
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

Kohl’s and Vera Wang

It was a pleasant surprise to see “Simply Vera” by Vera Wang all over Kohl’s Department Stores yesterday. Suddenly, I feel like I’ve moved to New York City.

I noticed them first in the lingerie department, where the silky chemises also had some netting details, and I said, “Wait…. something’s different about this” and checked the tag.

Oh, how exciting! Vera Wang at department store prices. :)

Kohl’s carrys an array of Vera Wang.. shoes, boots, jewelry, clothing and intimate apparel. Must have some Vera Wang designs.

Not A Bad Day

Yesterday, I worked a 13-hour day. We were loading laptops for a new set of end-users coming in. It took FOREVER! Finally, at 8:30pm, I got to leave work, just in time to get home and tuck The Little Kid into bed.

Today, training two classes; 5 people in one, 7 in another. I placed an emergency phone call to our salesperson so we could get some laptop cases and some power inverters for the laptops. I finished training and ran off to bail my mother-in-law out of the hospital. Drove her home, picked up some stuff from the grocery for her, got her meds, then headed home.

On the way home, I talked to a friend who kept me awake for the drive home. I was pretty wired at that point, so I was glad for the company.

Tomorrow is Friday! Hopefully, there will be sunny skies in the morning so I can ride my bike.
